UPDATE SATURDAY: Adding another set of overseas markets on Friday, including the UK, China, Spain, Taiwan and Scandinavia, Paramount/Skydance’s Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One won an international box office award 82.1 million dollars in 70 markets for 122.4 million dollars worldwide until yesterday.
That projects a full overseas debut in the $150 million range, give or take, with a global cume of $240 million including domestic projections. It could have entered right after that, and in any case it would have been below where we saw it enter the frame. Anthony has dismissed some of the reasons for this domestically. The key here for opening weekend purposes is whether there is significant worldwide Saturday growth for the Tom Cruise starrer. And it’s important to remember that there’s a lot of game ahead with the predicted matches (Japan is still off next week – no doubt against the headwinds of Hayao Miyazaki’s latest), but I’d bet that the trifecta of MISSION with Barbie AND Oppenheimer on deck, creates an excellent cinema opportunity across the board.
Looking closer M:I7Friday offshore numbers, taken was 25.8 million dollars (The $82.1 million run total includes previews). Ever-changing China vein M: I 7 in position no. 3 on opening day Friday, behind strong local competition, which is a trend we continue to see in the PRC; AND MISSION lost screens due to this. The take there on Friday was $7.4 million at 10,974 locations. Until Saturday (and not included in international/global totals above) Dead Reckoning Part One is about $17.6 million, up roughly 42% from Friday, and there was no slip in its Maoyan 9.4 audience score. The final launch is likely to be around $25 million in China.
IN crust, a $4.3M Saturday (also not included above) led to a $10.6M finish to date. The Friday-Saturday increase was a fantastic 130%.
The hope is that the Christopher McQuarrie-directed seventh installment follows this pattern in other markets with significant hits on Saturday.
