You should have a great time watching the funny and touching new animated film from directors Kirk DeMicco and Faryn Pearl, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken. The film revolves around a teenage kraken named – that’s right – Ruby Gillman (voiced by Lana Condor), a tough blue-collar teenager who lives like an ordinary girl and attends a local high school where she has a trio of friends. tight that want to spend time. with. Ruby wants to go to prom with a cool math tutor named Connor (Jaboukie Young-White), but she’s too shy to ask him out. Ruby’s mother, Agatha (a terrific Toni Collette), sells real estate for a living and wants what’s best for her daughter, who is actually unaware that she’s a teenage kraken, which complicates things for the film’s story line.
While a local sailor is out to catch any kraken he can find, Agatha is fiercely protective of her daughter Ruby. However, when Ruby saves Connor’s life by jumping into the water, she learns that she is actually a kraken and accidentally destroys a local library which puts the townspeople on the hunt for the kraken, which is supposed to be a sea monster. . that must be stopped. These kraken are actually good, though, and don’t want to hurt anyone. Agatha just wants to give Ruby a better life in the water. Ruby continues to rebel against her mother with her newfound knowledge of being a kraken.
Meanwhile, a popular girl at school with long hair named Chelsea Van Der Zee (voiced by Annie Murphy), takes credit for saving Connor. Chelsea is secretly a mermaid who needs Ruby’s help to make things more peaceful for krakens and mermaids to coexist. However, Chelsea may not be as honorable as they think they are. Chelsea and Ruby become friends, but Chelsea’s desires may be more than just making peace with the kraken.
Jane Fonda expertly voices Ruby’s “Grandma,” who tries to make Ruby take her place as a kraken under the water rather than above it. However, Ruby wants to go to prom with Connor and live a normal life. Ruby is torn between the wishes of “Grandma”, her mother Agatha and Chelsea as Ruby tries to find the right way to live her life. Ruby is embarrassed by the secret that she is a kraken at first, but eventually learns to embrace who she really is.
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken it is really sweet in nature and easy to admire. It’s fun to be entertained by the story as the characters compete for Ruby’s attention. Ruby is well written as a teenager who goes undercover to try to find her true calling by going under the sea and hanging out with those who can make her realize what she should do with her life. The film ends with the prom taking place on a boat, and Ruby and her kraken family must face a secret villain who threatens to end their existence. This scenario plays out in a crowd-pleasing and emotionally satisfying way.
Lana Condor is a perfect ruby. Condor adds charm to Ruby, which makes her one of the most likable animated characters of the year. Collette gives a very pleasant voice to the worried mother, but Jane Fonda absolutely walks away with the film’s most enjoyable role. As the larger-than-life green kraken, “Granny,” trains Ruby to use her powers for good, audiences will be pleasantly surprised at how beautifully all the material comes across on screen. It helps that the animation is colorful and the music and dialogue has a lot of personality behind it.
There are some drawbacks here. The film’s short running time and light plot suggest that this material was pretty thin to begin with. Fortunately, the voice talent creates their characters in such a way that the film feels like the plot has more substance than it probably actually does. However, these are minor flaws and don’t detract too much from the overall picture quality. Ruby will actually be quite relatable to children who see this new animated film.
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken it’s good fun for those who have already seen the superior BaSiC. Jane Fonda never fails to impress when she plays a role, and her role here is one of the most memorable supporting characters in animated films this year. This is a film that can only get better with time thanks to its spectacular visuals that can stand the test of time and ultimately make this a kid favorite for family audiences.
