The film can be watched simply for the performances and the way it is styled. It also offers some exciting scenes. But for a thriller, the film deserved a much tighter script, more suspense and elements of surprise. But we have remained in need of this.

There’s hardly a scene you’ll remember once you leave the theater, so the visuals don’t impress either. However, Vidya is good as she embodies the silly robotic character. It’s not her best performance in recent times, but she manages to bring nuance to her character despite the limitations. ‘Neeyat’ is entertaining as long as the mediocre performances can be overlooked. A difficult question!

Anu Menon’s Neeyat (Purpose), modeled after the erstwhile English palace murders, is mildly entertaining but also easily forgettable. It could be more. The underwhelming Agatha Christie-esque mystery written by Menon, Advaita Kala, Girvani Dhyani and Priya Venkatraman has a decent plot but lacks the memorable character sketches or tightly staged individual scenes that might have lifted a plot-driven crime thriller mechanically.

As a movie lover, it pains me to see a good plot let down by mediocre performances. This is the case with Neeyat. While no one is immediately evil in the film, no one rises above. In the middle of nowhere, everyone gets lost there, and eventually, even with a good story, the film stays at that level. Vidya and an unexpected surprise try to elevate the film but fail somewhere. Maybe a single watch, but honestly, a good opportunity that wasn’t taken advantage of.
